The Challenge:

In the earthquake-prone Osh Region of Kyrgyzstan, children in orphanages not only live under the constant threat of natural disasters but also struggle with the emotional and psychological aftermath of such events. The need for emotional support and guidance is critical to help them cope with their anxieties and build resilience. Click here to verify

"Living with the uncertainty of earthquakes has left many of our children feeling vulnerable and fearful. They need more than just physical safety; they need emotional security," - Aisuluu (Orphanage Director)

The Solution:

To address these challenges, Gulnara, a psychologist at the orphanage, initiated a peer support and mentorship program. This innovative approach pairs children with trained older peers and external volunteers who guide and support them, fostering a sense of community and mutual understanding within the orphanage.

"By sharing their experiences and supporting each other, our children learn that they are not alone in their struggles," - Gulnara (Psychologist)

The Implementation:

Gulnara, the orphanage’s psychologist, spearheaded the peer support and mentorship programs with a clear vision for healing. After assessing each child’s needs, she formed peer groups and selected empathetic mentors from among the older children and volunteers. Through hands-on training sessions, she equipped them with essential counseling skills, focusing on empathy, active listening, and supportive communication.

She then launched the program, facilitating the first of many weekly meetings where children and mentors shared experiences and formed bonds. Gulnara regularly reviewed the sessions, offering feedback and adapting strategies to enhance the mentorship experience.

"Our mentorship and peer support sessions have become a cornerstone of our care strategy, helping our children build trust and resilience," - Nurlan (Mentor)

The Impact:

The introduction of peer support and mentorship has profoundly affected the orphanage’s atmosphere, transforming it into a supportive and collaborative community. Children have become more open in expressing their feelings and more adept at supporting each other. Many have developed strong bonds with their mentors, who offer guidance and stability in uncertain times.

The program has significantly reduced feelings of isolation among the children and improved their overall mental health and well-being.

"The strength of our children doesn’t just come from surviving the earthquakes; it comes from the support they give to each other every day," - Meerim (Orphanage Caregiver)

Lessons Learned:

  • Importance of Suitable Pairings: Effective mentor-mentee relationships are crucial and depend on careful matching based on personality and emotional needs.

  • Power of Peer Support: Children are remarkably resilient when they feel part of a supportive community that understands their experiences.

  • Necessity of Continuous Supervision: Ongoing oversight and adaptation of the program are vital to address the dynamic emotional needs of children in a trauma-informed manner.
