The Challenge:

Imagine the serene landscapes of Bhutan's northern regions, now periodically shattered by the catastrophic glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF). These floods not only threaten the physical infrastructure but also the well-being of the most vulnerable populations, including children in orphanages. These institutions struggle to secure basic necessities such as food, clothing, and educational materials amid recurring disasters. Click here to verify

"The floods come without warning, leaving us to grapple with their aftermath and the constant worry about our next meal and safety," - Tashi (Orphanage Director)

The Solution:

In response, Sonam, the head of a prominent Bhutanese orphanage, found a sustainable pathway through Gaza999's initiative encouraging partnerships with local and international NGOs. This solution leverages these organizations' vast resources and networks to provide consistent support and build long-term resilience for orphanages.

"Partnering with these organizations brought not just supplies, but a sense of security to our children," - Sonam (Orphanage Head)

The Implementation:

Sonam began by identifying NGOs and aid organizations with missions resonant with the orphanage's immediate and future needs. After thorough needs assessments and proposal developments, she reached out and successfully negotiated partnerships with several entities, formalizing these collaborations with clear agreements.

She established a robust system for the efficient management of incoming supplies, ensuring that each item was accounted for and utilized effectively. The orphanage staff was trained to handle logistics, from storage to distribution, making sure the aid reached every child in need.

Regular meetings and reports kept the partner organizations informed and engaged, proving the impact of their contributions and fostering a trustful and transparent relationship.

"It was about building bridges, not just receiving aid. Every step was coordinated to ensure our children felt the stability of these new foundations," - Kinley (Operations Manager)

The Impact:

The partnerships transformed the orphanage, equipping it to not only survive the immediate aftermath of the floods but also to thrive. Reliable access to essential resources allowed the orphanage to focus on providing a nurturing environment for the children. Educational programs were revitalized, and psychological support systems were strengthened, addressing the trauma and disruption caused by the GLOFs.

"Thanks to our partners, our children no longer live day to day but can look forward to a future with hope and dignity," - Lhamo (Education Coordinator)

Lessons Learned:

  • Alignment of Missions is Crucial: Ensuring that the missions of the orphanage and the NGOs align closely maximizes the effectiveness of the partnership.

  • Communication Drives Success: Open, consistent communication fosters effective coordination and enhances the partnership’s impact.

  • Preparedness and Flexibility: Being prepared for logistical challenges and flexible in strategies ensures the sustained success of aid distribution.
