"Each day brings a reminder of what we've lost, and the need for a safe place for our children has never been more urgent," - Priya (a local mother)

The Solution:

In response to this dire need, Gaza999 facilitated the creation of community and volunteer-driven childcare initiatives, tapping into the resilient spirit of Kathmandu’s residents. These initiatives focus on leveraging local resources and the goodwill of volunteers to provide quality, accessible childcare.

"Discovering Gaza999’s model for community-driven childcare gave us not just a plan, but hope," - Anil (a community leader)

The Implementation:

Anil and the community leaders began by conducting a comprehensive needs assessment to understand the childcare gaps and mobilize local resources. They then developed a volunteer training program, which included certification in childcare and safety standards, to ensure that volunteers could provide professional-level care.

Community childcare centers were established in available local spaces, equipped with donated toys and educational materials. These centers quickly became hubs of activity, supported by parents and community members who actively participated in rotational volunteering and organized support groups.

"The centers were built by us, for us, and reflect our dedication to our children’s future," - Sunita (a volunteer and parent)

The Impact:

The volunteer-driven childcare centers have significantly alleviated the burden on families in Kathmandu, providing a safe and nurturing environment for hundreds of children. These centers not only offer childcare but also serve as beacons of community strength and resilience, fostering a sense of normalcy and hope amidst ongoing recovery efforts.

"Seeing our children happily engaged and learning in the centers we created is a testament to the strength of our community," - Raj (a participating father)

Lessons Learned:

  • Empowerment Through Participation: Empowering community members to participate in the setup and operation of childcare centers ensured their relevance and sustainability.

  • Quality Assurance in Volunteer Programs: Implementing rigorous training and certification for volunteers helped maintain high standards of care and trust among parents.

  • Resource Mobilization: Effective mobilization and utilization of local resources proved vital in establishing and sustaining the childcare centers.
