"Every day is a struggle for water, a struggle that keeps us apart more than it brings us together," - Hina (Local Elder)
The Solution:
Sohaib, a community health worker, was inspired by Gaza999’s initiative to foster inter-generational wellness through shared activities. These activities were designed to bridge the generational gap, enhancing physical health and emotional well-being by bringing together the young and old in meaningful engagement.
"Finding Gaza999’s program was like discovering a new way to weave our community closer," - Sohaib (Community Health Worker)
The Implementation:
Sohaib began by forming a planning committee that included representatives from each age group to ensure the activities were inclusive and appealing to all. This committee designed a range of activities, from traditional games that echo the region's heritage to group exercises tailored for varying abilities.
Facilitators with expertise in managing diverse groups were recruited and trained to nurture positive interactions and accommodate the specific needs of mixed-age participants. A comprehensive promotion strategy utilized local media, social networks, and community centers to reach a broad audience, emphasizing the benefits of joint participation.
The chosen venues were central, equipped with amenities that cater to both elderly and younger participants, making them easily accessible and conducive to interaction.
"Each activity is a step towards healing our community, physically and emotionally," - Fatima (Program Facilitator)
The Impact:
The inter-generational wellness activities quickly became a vital part of life in Sindh’s villages, drawing participants from across the community spectrum. These activities not only improved physical health but also healed emotional wounds, helping to mitigate the stress caused by environmental challenges. Children, adults, and elders found common ground, sharing stories and laughter, which strengthened community bonds and reduced feelings of isolation.
"This initiative didn’t just bring us together; it brought us back to life," - Amir (Young Participant)
Lessons Learned:
- Inclusive Planning: Involving representatives from all age groups in the planning process ensured the activities were relevant and enjoyable for everyone, fostering wider acceptance and enthusiasm.
- Empathetic Facilitation: Training facilitators to handle inter-generational dynamics sensitively was crucial in promoting harmonious interactions and full participation.
- Flexible Venue Selection: Choosing accessible and well-equipped venues was key to ensuring that everyone, regardless of age or mobility, could participate comfortably and safely.
- Regular Feedback Integration: Continuously incorporating feedback from participants helped refine the activities and keep the program dynamic and responsive to the community’s needs.
