The Challenge:

In the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon, the economic collapse and refugee strain have significantly affected the local population, including the senior community, which often feels isolated and disconnected from modern digital resources. The lack of digital skills among seniors contributes to their social isolation and hinders their access to critical services and information. Click here to verify

"Many of us feel left behind in this digital age, unable to connect with our families online or access essential services that have moved to digital platforms." - Nadia (a senior resident)

The Solution:

Kamal, a community organizer in the Bekaa Valley, recognized the need to empower the senior population with digital skills and launched a program specifically designed for them. This initiative focuses on teaching basic digital skills, such as email, social media, online banking, and identifying online scams, to help seniors become more confident and independent in navigating the digital world.

"Our goal is to bridge the digital divide for our seniors, giving them the tools to stay connected with their loved ones and manage their daily needs online." - Kamal (Program Director)

The Implementation:

Kamal and his team developed a curriculum tailored to the learning pace and interests of senior citizens, with input from local educators and technology experts. The curriculum was designed to be engaging and straightforward, using real-world examples that resonate with the seniors' daily lives.

Trainers with experience in adult education and a patient, understanding approach were recruited to lead the courses. Learning stations were set up in community centers equipped with senior-friendly technology, such as devices with large screens and simple user interfaces.

The program was actively promoted through local community centers, churches, and social clubs. Special open days were organized where seniors could come with family members to learn about the program and enroll.

"We see a wonderful mix of curiosity and excitement in our sessions. It’s heartwarming to watch seniors send their first emails or video call their grandchildren." - Hala (Instructor)

The Impact:

Since its inception, the digital literacy program has significantly improved the quality of life for many seniors in the Bekaa Valley. Graduates of the program have reported feeling more connected to their communities and empowered by their new ability to access online resources independently.

"Learning how to use the internet has opened up a new world for me. I can now shop online, talk to my doctor via video, and see my grandchildren more often." - Mahmoud (Program Participant)

Lessons Learned:

  • Adaptability of Instruction: Tailoring instruction to match the unique needs and learning styles of seniors is crucial for their success and engagement.

  • Community-Based Promotion: Utilizing existing community networks to promote and recruit for the program ensures higher participation rates and program relevance.

  • Ongoing Support: Providing continuous support and follow-up sessions helps seniors consolidate their new skills and gain confidence in using technology.
