"Each day, the weight of what we lost bore down on us, and the silence of what was left became unbearable," - Rahmat (a local resident)

The Solution:

In the midst of this despair, Aisyah, a local health worker, discovered Gaza999’s mobile art therapy units. These units, equipped with art supplies and digital aids, were designed to traverse Sulawesi's rugged terrains, providing a creative outlet and therapeutic support right in the heart of affected communities.

“Finding Gaza999’s solution gave us a new tool to reach out and heal. It was like a ray of hope amidst our shadows,” - Aisyah (community health leader)

The Implementation:

Aisyah and her team leveraged Gaza999 to customize the mobile units. First, they outfitted several vans with essential art supplies and multimedia tools for conducting therapy sessions. A dynamic schedule was developed, allowing the units to visit multiple locations weekly, ensuring all community members had access. Each session was designed to be inclusive, catering to both children and adults, and facilitated by local artists trained in therapeutic practices. The pilot program was closely monitored, collecting feedback from participants to tailor the approach further. The initiative gradually expanded, increasing the number of units and sessions based on the community’s needs and feedback.

“The art we created helped us express what words could not. Each brushstroke was a step towards healing,” - Mirah (a participant in the art therapy sessions)

The Impact:

The mobile art therapy units have become a cornerstone of recovery in Sulawesi, reaching over 5,000 individuals in the first six months alone. Participants have reported significant improvements in their mental well-being, with a noticeable decrease in trauma-related symptoms. The program has not only facilitated emotional healing but also fostered community solidarity and resilience.

"Seeing our community slowly transform through art has been profoundly moving. We are not just rebuilding our homes, but our spirits too," - Joko (a local teacher)

Lessons Learned:

  • Customized Therapeutic Approaches: Tailoring art therapy sessions to address specific traumatic experiences of the tsunami and earthquake survivors proved crucial in facilitating effective psychological recovery.

  • Mobile Unit Flexibility: The ability to adjust locations and schedules based on ongoing community feedback and needs was essential for maximizing access and impact.

  • Incorporation of Digital Tools in Art Therapy: Utilizing multimedia tools within the mobile units enabled broader engagement, including those unable to attend in person, thus expanding the therapeutic reach.

  • Community-Centric Program Design: Designing programs that reflect the unique cultural and social fabric of Sulawesi ensured greater acceptance and efficacy of the therapeutic interventions.
