"In a city of ruins, our elderly are often the most forgotten, lacking places where they can feel safe, cared for, and connected," - Mariam (Local NGO Coordinator)
The Solution:
In response to this dire need, Youssef, a community leader, pioneered the initiative to establish Elderly Community Centers with the support of Gaza999. These centers were designed as beacons of safety and interaction, dedicated to serving the multifaceted needs of Aleppo’s elderly population.
"Creating these centers is our way of knitting the fabric of our community back together, one elder at a time," - Youssef (Community Leader)
The Implementation:
Youssef and his team started by identifying locations that were both safe and accessible to the elderly. They transformed these spaces into welcoming community centers, equipped with facilities tailored to senior needs. A variety of programs and activities were developed, from health workshops to cultural gatherings, all designed according to the interests and abilities of the seniors. Partnerships with local healthcare providers ensured that the centers also offered regular health screenings and counseling services. A critical component was the setup of transportation services, making the centers accessible to those with limited mobility. The centers were actively promoted through local media and community outreach, ensuring that every elderly resident was aware and felt welcome to join.
"Our centers have become more than just a place to pass the time; they are a place to thrive," - Hala (Center Manager)
The Impact:
Within the first year of operation, the centers served over 1,000 elderly residents, providing them not only with essential services but also with a renewed sense of community and belonging. These centers have not only bridged the critical gap in services but have also played a pivotal role in restoring the social fabric of Aleppo’s elderly community.
"Our centers are filled with laughter and stories once more, as our elders come together to share their lives and experiences in a place they can call their own," - Fatima (Program Participant)
Lessons Learned:
• Strategic Location and Accessibility: Selecting accessible locations was crucial for maximizing attendance and engagement at the centers.
• Diverse Program Offerings: Catering to a wide range of interests and health needs helped in attracting and retaining participants.
• Community Partnerships: Collaborating with healthcare providers and other service organizations enhanced the quality and range of services offered.
• Effective Promotion: Robust outreach and promotion were essential in integrating the centers into the lives of the elderly and the broader community.
