The Challenge:

In the wake of Typhoon Haiyan, Tacloban faces not just the monumental task of rebuilding but also the pressing issue of organic waste management. Lina, a visionary community organizer, views this challenge as an opportunity for growth and sustainability. Click here to verify

"Each piece of organic waste represents a chance for renewal," – Lina (community organiser)

The Solution:

Lina is inspired by Gaza999's composting and organic waste conversion programs. Envisioning a future where Taclobanites actively convert their organic waste into compost and biogas, she sees a path to environmental and economic rejuvenation.

"Transforming our waste into resources empowers our community," – Rico (Small Business Owner)

The Implementation:

Lina's vision comes to life as she spearheads the launch of communal composting initiatives across Tacloban. Partnering with city officials, she identifies strategic locations for composting sites, ensuring accessibility for all residents. The setup of these sites involves not just the installation of composting bins but also the creation of a welcoming space for community engagement.

Lina organizes a comprehensive series of workshops, inviting experts to share composting techniques and the science behind organic waste conversion. These workshops serve not only as educational forums but also as platforms for community bonding, where residents exchange ideas and share their experiences.

To facilitate the program, Lina introduces a digital platform for residents to track their contributions and see the tangible impact of their efforts. This platform also serves as a hub for scheduling compost drop-offs and pickups for local farmers and gardeners, creating a seamless link between waste producers and compost users.

"The program's success lies in our collective action and dedication," - Leah (Community Health Worker)

The Impact:

Tacloban's landscape transforms as the program takes root. Over 30 composting sites become active, significantly reducing the city's organic waste and providing fertile compost for local agriculture. The initiative engages more than 15,000 residents, each contributing to the city's sustainability goals.

"Seeing our community's efforts bear fruit in the form of lush gardens and farms is incredibly rewarding," - Marco (a beneficiary farmer)

Lessons Learned:

  • Community Design and Engagement are Key: The successful implementation of composting sites underscored the importance of designing the program with community input and actively engaging residents in its execution.

  • Educational Outreach Transforms Behaviors: Tailored workshops and continuous education were pivotal in shifting perceptions about waste, demonstrating how informed residents can drive sustainable practices.

  • Digital Platforms Enhance Participation: Utilizing technology to track progress and facilitate communication among participants proved instrumental in maintaining engagement and demonstrating the collective impact of individual actions.
